Chiharu lovinsMemberHello Coach Herman, I can hit ball over the fence most of the time, but most balls go toward right side. continental swing path may be better, but I still tend to like to finish toward left side at the end instead of same side finish. I will work on it some more. Thank you again for your feedback

Chiharu lovinsMemberVIP coaching review: Coach Herman, I love your coaching style. You are great at recognizing what I need to work on and send me appropriate drills to work on. I did not start playing tennis until I was about 20 years or so. Thought I have played tennis about 20 years or so on and off, I have learned tennis mostly on my own watching YouTube videos, some ladies clinic like group lessons and about 20 private lessons over this many years, and while I hit a lot with my husband regularly, I do not really know good drills to do so we just hit back and forth from baseline mostly. Now that I have drills to work on for foot work, serves, approach shots etc while I hit with him, hitting is much more fun and my husband does compliment that I improved.
One thing I really like about your coaching is that you ask me to try something I would never even think about doing: for example, my backhand volley is two hand backhand volley. After seeing my two hand backhand volley, you suggested me to try one hand backhand volley one and I started to try that. Now whenever I practice volley, I try to practice one hand backhand volley, which I have never try to practice before (never even thought of trying). It helps so much when I have to reach to balls that are away from me with one hand backhand volley than with two hand backhand volley, and I even scored enough times with one hand backhand volley. This one hand backhand volley, for some reasons, also makes me hit more one hand backhand slice also for unknown reasons. My normal backhand ground stroke is two hand backhand stroke, so I do two hand backhand ground strokes mostly, but since I started to try one hand backhand volley, I do more one hand backhand slice ground stroke…I play with more variety now even at baseline since I started to try one hand backhand volley. Now I also want to learn one hand backhand slice properly. Buggy whip shot, as you know, is another thing I would never practiced unless you suggested. This is not the shot I want to hit normally, but it does help me when I am pulled wide etc, and I notice that I do use it on wide shots etc. As you might have noticed, I am baseline player who likes to stay at the baseline and hit ground strokes. I have to be conscious about moving to the net, otherwise, I will not go to the net, but working on transition footwork (lift and land etc) does help me to move to the net.
As I mentioned I am mostly self-taught tennis player, and do not know as many details. What I really like your coaching is that you make me try something I have never thought of trying, and you help me achieve that in small steps. of course, I am aware that I have certain capability, but I may not have certain other capability. I also like you asking me to practice with targets. I have never done that before. Now I realize, when I play match, that I have been serving without thinking where to serve most of the time. Now, I still serve without aiming most of the time, but at least, I am aware, and will try to serve with aim each serve whether I can, or not.
also to answer your question on when to use lift and land, I would use it when ball is hit and land near service line and not too wide so that I can step forward and land to put body weight forward to attach to opponents weaker side. Am I right?
Thank you so much for all the video analysis you have done so far, and working with me patiently!

Chiharu lovinsMemberHello Coach Herman, I tried standing and lift and land. I do like gallop steps. I feel I tend to step forward more than I should but it does help me to move forward toward the net. Please look at them.Thank you so much for comments

Chiharu lovinsMemberHello Coach Herman, I tried same side finish and I had difficulty finishing on the same side. it did not feel so natural, so I do not think I did it correctly, but these drills seemed to help me with pronation that I have never be able to do before. please let me know what you think

Chiharu lovinsMemberHello Coach Herman, here is catch balls and also another video with combined “shadow stroke” and “split and move” of volley into one. for shadow stroke recording’s backhand, I tried both one hand and 2 hand backhand volley’s shadow stroke. In case doing shadow stroke, one hand backhand volley feels okay to me.

Chiharu lovinsMemberHello coach ahermwn
I did only buggy whip on hand feed short feed this time from service line. I understand that we should not finish on the same side. Thank you for advice.

Chiharu lovinsMemberHello Coach Herman, I did some more buggy whip. I feel I have to alternate regular and buggy whip when I practice buggy whip. Please see attached videos. some of them look fine. some looks I swing little too slow for buggy whip.

Chiharu lovinsMemberHello Herman,
I have always did 2-hand backhand volleys for so many years. I like your suggestions, like this one, you challenge me to try something I would not try otherwise (like this one hand backhand volley and buggy whip FH). Following your suggestion, I tried one-hand backhand volley this time! I am sometimes late but when I am not late, it looks better. I wish I learned one hand backhand volley when I learned volley first time! Anyways, I will keep on doing one hand backhand volley from now on whenever I have change to practice volley. All the other technique videos were very helpful. Thank you.

Chiharu lovinsMemberHello Coach Herman, I am sending BH and FH approach shot videos today. My BH gallop step approach shot feels better. My FH approach shot footwork may not be correctly done. one of the video for FH approach shot was done with buggy whip like shot. Thank you for your feedback.

Chiharu lovinsMemberHello coach Herman,
1) i started to be able to serve without moving Blackfoot most of the time (90% or so), so I stopped using sandbag.
2) I tried to score serve percentage. my deuce side is often 7/10 to 8/10, and it is decent, but my ad side is low and I got 5/10 to 6/10 often earlier. so I am working on improving percentage from ad side. I do not know exactly what makes my deuce side much higher percentage than ad side, but I may slice more from deuce side since I have to hit serve more crosscourt (than inside out like serve from deuce side?). I also watched video of delaying and keeping head looking to the ball at contact so I am working on this.
3) Thank you for compliment that I do good slice serve, but I have been trying to hit flat serve. But for some reasons, it has been hard to do pronation to hit flat serve and I have not been able to do pronation part of flat serve. I think my arm/wrist naturally do slice motion. I meant to do flat serve. it may be little easier for me to learn kick serve than flat serve if kick serve does not require pronation.
Please see attached video and let me know anything you notice.
Thank you so much

Chiharu lovinsMemberHello Coach Herman, thank you again for your reply. I had buggy whip session for my FH. You send me all these techniques that I would not practice otherwise. Thank you. I am not exactly sure if I am doing this right or wrong. I also included some FH video where I tried to hit forward more. please see attached.

Chiharu lovinsMemberHello Herman, Thank you so much for reply. I tried “drop step switch”. I do not turn to the other side of the fence as much. I will work on it. while I was recording and watching video, I noticed that I often hit my forehand with waist high finish with rack head facing down (I am including these videos). I mentioned that I tend to swipe across front without extending forehand out, and finish with racket head down. please see attached video. The way I hit looks so uncomfortable. I feel this is partly because I am not stepping in since my weight seems to shift from right foot to left foot (from right to left parallel to the baseline) rather than from back to forward. I may have to be more conscious of my footwork and high finish more, but if you have any suggestion how to fix this, please let me know. thank you so much. Chiharu

Chiharu lovinsMemberHello Herman, Thank you for short ball BH videos. I tried Lift and land and It is very helpful. Please see attached clips. I usually stays at baseline and do not go to the net, but it helps me to hit with weight and also go to the net which I do not otherwise.1) Would you please send me similar video to handle short balls for forehand also? I feel it will help with my forehand. 2) also for backhand, I sometimes hit balls too close to my body and get jammed. if you have some drills to help so that I do not get too close to the ball, would you please send it?
Thank you so much. Chiharu

Chiharu lovinsMemberHello Coach Herman, I tried Pete Sampras start with Rock (sandbag equivalent) and target. I am still working on early racket drop but would you see if Sampras start is helping me with my serve? I saw one clip of serve recovery footwork video and tried to practice it with my serve.
Thank you so much

Chiharu lovinsMemberHello, with my backhand, I wanted to improve more, specifically, 1) I tend to get jammed and get too close to the ball. this also applies to my forehand too. 2) For both forehand and backhand, I do not deal with short balls well as well as 3) high bouncing balls. if you have any good drills for these. Thank you
