Hello Coach Herman, I am too much ahead of myself. Pain is going away and I feel much better but I should hold off my serve practice some time (maybe tennis too) for at least couple of weeks. I will get back to core strengthening and Physical therapy first to fix my back in working condition first. So please ignore Martic serve or any kind of serve yet…I should be able to practice serves on knee etc meanwhile so I will try that while I am on PT.

    Thank you

    Thank you!

You might know that I had bad back issue around last Christmas and this January so that I bought several strengthening work out video etc. on 7/3 and 7/4 this year, I had worst lower back pain. I took ibuprofen 800, which usually help relieve pain, did nothing and I could not walk for few days. I went to orthopedic walk-in to get it checked. X-ray showed that my L5 lumber vertebra bone got pushed back and got out of position. It was really pushed out enough so that doctor did not tell me which bone got pushed back out of vertebral column.

I was watching Petra Martic and Iga swiatek’s Wimbledon match about a week ago and I remember commentator said that Martic had one year off because of back injury. Her serve looked somewhat different in a way that her back was fairly straight and not much shoulder over shoulder type of tilt. I am thinking that I want to model her serve for my back issue. If you happen to know good way to serve for someone who has back issue, please let me know. Meanwhile, I started to resume my core exercises, which I was getting lazy and started to skip recently.

Thank you so much for reply

    Hello Coach Herman,

Thank you for suggestions on drills. You mentioned Serena drill for warm up, so I did do it for warm up but I did not actually record. I did record service box drill and racket face closed drills. For both drills, I drop feed myself, and it saw something crazy…with service box angle drill, I did not notice anything crazy. But when I saw racket face closed drill especially side views, I did see I swing racket up with string and palm up…at some point, I remembered Jeff saying butt cap facing toward the net so I started to be more conscious about it and I started to see racket face was closed better. recording of this from back is after side view. so when you see racket face closed drill from back, my racket face looks more closed. I must naturally swing like this with palm up after contact since these balls does not have much spin, nor speed, nor they are not jamming me…I probably hit racket face closed about half of the Time but I probably hit with palm up after contact the rest of half of the time….this looks crazy, but this may explain why I often feel so uncomfortable hitting forehand shot…Please see attached videos and thank you so much for reply

Thank you so much for your review! My Back foot moved around so much so that I did sandbag practice in the past. I improved so that someday, I can do without moving back foot much, but some other day, I move my Back foot still. I think I must put weight more on front foot and not much on back foot so that back foot can adjust to my body and move around. When I am intentional to put weight on back foot, it helps to stabilize back foot. I think I naturally like to move my back foot so I still see back foot moving often, but when it moves, it does not seem to move as much as in the past so that my body is not opening up to the net as much now.

You asked several questions during your review. Below is my answers:

I do play USTA league currently, but this year, I am not playing much league tennis as I used to in the past years. I am mostly just practicing. I have been practicing more serves this year for some reasons than ever. I wish I did many years ago. And I play one tournament later around October, but that may be it. This October one will be doubles.

This year, I am not playing much league tennis, but when I played USTA league, though I play both doubles and singles, many compliment my singles play. I think most compliment my speed and court coverage.

I have not intentionally practiced topspin serve and slice serve as much these days. But when I put targets and practice serving to T, or wide serves, I should also practice mixing up all 3 types of serves. Slice for wide serve from deuce and also for T and body from ad side., topspin for wide out from ad side etc etc in addition to flat serve that I am currently working on. I think practicing flat serve with top spin serve or slice serve probably helps flat serves since it will make me feel pronation finish better after dirty diaper finish than practicing pronation only.

I have not looked into too much doubles strategies. I have seen Tennis evolution has some section for doubles, and I was thinking of checking that up, but I have not looked at it yet.

I am doing this program, of course, to improve my tennis skills mostly, but not for my tennis ranking or anything like that. for me, I probably play tennis more for exercise purpose, learning skills, and probably the real reason I like playing tennis is that I love hitting balls after balls…

Other big reason why I am doing this program, in addition to improve my tennis, is so that I can also teach our 9 year old daughter who is pretty good at tennis already.

Thank you so much for your review. I will practice flat serves along with top spin and slice serve with targets and will send you video soon.

Hello Coach Herman, I did flat serve with full swing. when I do slower, I do better with pronation, but when I start to do full swing, I start to swing with dirty diaper like finish. My racket seem to face side fence slightly in few occasions, but only slightly and many times, it seems to face toward me like dirty diaper. please see videos of my serves

Hello Coach Herman, thank you so much for reply. I did recording of my pronation practice. It somehow looks like kick serve’s diaper. For pronation, would we not throw arm forward? Thank you for your video analysis!

Thank you so much for reply. I always had lower back issues since I gave birth, but this year sometime after Christmas, it got really worse so that I could not hold my work bag…I purchased strengthening program that I can do at home and did it daily during the winter. its mostly squat, lunges, and core work using body weight and resistance band. As I mentioned, I usually play outside, so it worked out well during winter when it was cold outside. I still do strengthening training, but I do it less frequently since can play outside more often (now it’s warm, but very rainy). partly because of weather (I did not want to ask my husband to feed me when its cold outside), whenever I have a chance, I practiced serves. I didn’t put target since i still have to be very conscious about not moving backfoot around (when I try to work on something else, my Blackfoot start to move around) so I tried not to think too many other things. I want to do flat serves really, but I have tendency to do slice serves. i think partly because my toss position and also not being able to do pronation well for flat serves. I have been practicing serves at least twice a week, or even more (just serves for 45′ or more, and not just 5-10′) these days. so I feel better about serving. I do not think I mastered platform yet so I have to be conscious about it still, but I also started to feel that I can start adding target. if you have any good advice on improving flat serve for me, please let me know. I will start to add target.

Thank you so much for reply

Thank you for reply, I just do not want to add anything additional coaching to this VIP for now, especially since weather will get worse for next some months. But I definitely want to keep on going with this VIP program as long as weather allows..

Hello Coach Herman, I usually do not go to the net unless I am forced to. So it is a good practice for me to do. Thank you for your advice
